I actually do feel some sympathy towards key members of the new government in the UK who are now being accused of receiving gifts such as holiday use of apartments provided by wealthy donors etc.
It is very easy to sit in opposition and criticise the folk in power. Labour is starting to find out just how difficult it is, to turn down freebies when you’re in government! The freebies will keep coming. Are these freebies just from kindhearted well-wishers? Is there any such thing as a kindhearted well-wisher? I think we all know the answer to that
Human beings are driven by a thirst for wealth, power, but we all repackage that by using words such as: comfort, stability, providing for our kids or just trying to build a future
The poor criticise and quietly envy the rich. If/when they (the poor) gain wealth, their behaviour simply mirror those of the folk the6 have spent their entire lives criticising
People enter politics and display the meagre earnings and imply they are doing it just to be of service to the public. Ok. Then a few years later, they step out of politics and straight into the private sector and into high-salaried jobs that they would never have been considered for, had they not held the public sector political positions prior.
There is no selflessness out there. Nobody is doing anything just for the love of the public.
Selflessness (or close to it) is when you see a retired person getting out there on a Saturday, picking up litter in their neighbourhood. But even so, it is still an action taken for the satisfaction of dwelling in a litter-free environment.
It’s the reason socialism has never worked anywhere. I would love to see people who save lives in their jobs e.g. nurses, doctors etc., and those who put their lives in danger for the rest of us e.g. the police, firefighters, those who get conscripted into armed forces etc., get paid significantly by taxing footballers who earn £300,000 a week for plating football or musicians etc., the very wealthy, using a progressive scale: you earn more, you pay more. So others can earn more. Unfortunately, it just simply doesn’t work like that. The wealthy can afford the best accountants, lawyers etc. Some will say, do the poor need to do more? Just like those politicians who were in opposition criticised those in government for taking freebies and now, they are in government and finding it hard to say no to freebies. And perhaps even now starting to think they deserve those freebies. Quickly forgetting the years they spent criticising the past government
I doubt society will ever find a way to get close to creating some form of equity. Human being are too self-centred for that..
