People who have never been in a position of power do not realise just how tough it is, for politicians not to accept freebies. Many of those freebies come in totally innocuous formats that they could easily be overlooked, until you then have to declare it in the register, and by then, it’s too late
Whichever way you look at it, this new labour government is trying to be forthright. They are not and cannot be perfect, simply because there is no perfection out there. It doesn’t exist. But if you look at some of their early missteps e.g. Jess Phillips said some dodgy stuff and she apologised. Keir Starmer has now refunded some of his freebies. The only unfortunate aspect of this freebie saga – and I am sure that with a little bit of reflection, he would see it as such – is him not immediately apologising and explaining that he got it wrong and although, he hasn’t done anything wrong, the optics isn’t great, so, here’s a refund, won’t accept other freebies and end of story.
