I am not a fan of politics and I try to avoid commenting on politics, but we are in such dire times, that it is virtually impossible to avoid speaking about politics.
Earlier this year, we had an incoming Labour government. There is absolutely no doubt that they are well-intentioned. They are decent individuals who mean well and truly wish to help people. They want to reduce poverty in the UK and help the downtrodden. Unfortunately, they have a tough job to do. It also doesn’t appear that in their 14 years in opposition, they have been able to find alternative solutions. They have come in and so far, have not been able to avoid making many of the very same mistakes past government that they have criticised made.
It is very saddening. It is looking less and less likely, that they will be able to turn things around. That is indeed truly sad, as they do really mean well and would like to do well for the country. Sadly, it looks like they do not know how.
Their immediate fixation on fixing issues that they need a longer-term fix for, has become their undoing. Coming in and slapping VAT on independent schools, without as much as a clue of the wider implications, has really been damaging for them. Same as the removal of winter fuel payment to some pensioners. But most damaging so far, has been the lack of real, new ideas. Their key people taking gifts & freebies is trivial. Not having any real ideas to put to the table, after 14 years of sitting in opposition, is inexcusable!
They’re cancelling infrastructure projects, saying there isn’t funds. Well, was that not the very same excuse the last government put forward for cancelling HS2 Phase 2? So, what exactly is the point of having a new government? They must have better ideas, or at worst, better or fresh excuses.
I will remain hopeful that they surprise us by turning this around. So far, it has been a truly awful start!!!
