Ditching silly norms going forward…

There are a number of laudable norms out there e.g. saying thank you when someone does something for you. And there are some non-negotiable norms set in law e.g. abiding by law & order. I’m happy with all of that.

But going forward, and in addition to some silly norms e.g. Valentine’s Day celebrations, Christmas (with some even venturing as far as to say it’s “holidays” and not religious; well, it is, and it is based on religion and we should not try to bend it to our own respective interpretations; ‘Christ-mas’ it is, the birth of ‘Christ’, leave it be as it is, if like myself, you’re not interested in religion, then just opt out. Not try to change it to suit. At least that will be my stance going forward: i will simply opt out)..

Birthdays? utter rubbish. We are in a world that’s so twisted; children dying left, right and centre, and we look the other way and try to explain that wars are a necessity at times? Well, what’s there to celebrate on a birthday? Going forward, I will make the first day of each year (Jan 1) my birthday and I will use it as a day of reflection and anyone looking to wish me a happy birthday can very well do so on Jan 1 each year, as this is my birthday going forward.

I have always tried to be someone who isn’t led by what others do and what society tell us we should do (well, other than those useful norms mentioned above e.g. being polite). This year has been a real eye-opener, including the most recent debacle of the year, where the 4 years of Biden normalcy in the US, have now ended being pointless really. What is the point of those 4 calm years? Many are now out in force predicting doom in the next 4 years, but would it not be more productive, to just try to be positive and constructive: after all, we say we subscribe to democracy, it is what it is. Thee were 4 years (2020 – 2024) to have convinced Americans to give the democrats another 4 years; why couldn’t they do so? People can put whatever excuses and reasons (it’s because she’s a woman, it’s because she it white etc… all are just excuses…) they want, the way this works, is you get people to vote for you….
