This week, the new UK labour government released an update of migration figures, which really has nothing to do with them, as it largely spans the period before they took office. But more importantly, the excellent work they (Labour government) have started to do, will surely take some months to have an effect. But instead of clearly explaining what these figures represent: ‘Net Migration’ is not about the folk rowing across the English Channel! It is a figure that represents the rate of Brits exiting the country as well as non-Brits coming in (including the much greater figure of those coming in legally). The overwhelming number of those coming in legally and why? (is it driven by skills shortages? an appetite for cheaper labour? or what?), that is what needs reflecting on
Sadly, the focus on the last government (Conservatives) and their failure to tackle the issue, while making all sorts of noise in public about the much lower proportion rowing in across the channel, is not going to help the labour government address this matter or get the baying public on side.
The labour government needs to let go of the blame game. Spend more time explaining – even if as it were, the baying public won’t be convinced either way, as this is today’s social media reality, people will moan endlessly – to people, what these issues are: at present, there are several kinds of jobs and skills that Brits have not bothered with and this makes it impossible to drastically chop some of the legal migration, which is quite high. That then leads to all sorts of other cost-draining problems for the government. Ending the illegal migration across the English Channel is not something that will happen overnight, and Rwanda wouldn’t have done anything to solve the problem (it was not an effective deterrent) and indeed, the steps labour are taking, are the only steps that can lead to putting an end to it – albeit, I still fully believe tech is what we must have, as the end of channel crossings will only lead to those folk finding other openings. Tech solutions will keep the government ahead of the curve.
The tough-talking by the PM in his speech yesterday, has clearly not done anything to convince the baying public – in truth, no amount of tough-talking from him, will achieve anything with those folk, because he is not using the indecent words that resonate with them – what they want to hear him say is: “we must end this invasion”, “these animals coming I are eating our pets”. That sort of language is what gains you popularity with the kinds of people who would riot and throw chairs at the police and injure ambulance crew. He has no hope of convincing those people. But there are some, whom he can convince – the UK is like that; we are largely highly intelligent people; even those without higher education – if he stops wasting time blaming the previous government and get on with engaging better with the nation and putting the real facts out there. Has he not already demonstrated that he sees this as a big issue? HE HAS! And on top of that, his government are taking real steps to address this, as opposed to just slogans!
