History tells us appeasement doesn’t work, but equally, wars don’t solve anything either! Ask the Americans. They fought a civil war to eradicate hate, 159 years later, they still cannot seem able to set their differences aside to live harmoniously. There was even whispers of a civil war if Trump didn’t win the 2024 Presidential election. Then take a look at Europe: from Brexit to Ukraine to the ongoing resurgence of populism and isolationist agenda that now appear to be preferred by many. The summer riots in the UK against immigration, where so many police officers were injured by rioters and the very fabric of our society and civilised discourse, shredded! How could we not find a way to discuss our differences without resorting to violence and a breakdown of law & order?!! This is supposed to be the 21st century right???
We just appear hellbent on going backwards. Many feel there is something in the past that is so desirable. A time when fewer and fewer people held privilege and there was no migration perhaps? Was there ever such an era? And should that be where we want to be in 2024??
Is it not time we made wars totally unacceptable?
Is it not time we step back from the brink?
We must find alternatives, we must find options to address our difference without ending in armed conflict.
Deterrence is fine, to keep the folk making the weapons in business, if they do not wish to find other products to manufacture. But we must find a way to pull back and stay back, from any possibility of war. It solves nought!
